I've always felt that my best life is found between the trapeze bars. I crave change, adventure. Always have. I blame it on my parents. Growing up in northern MN with two entrepreneurial parents who insisted my sisters and I dream big, life was always a series of trapeze swings.

Fast forward to my life as a parent, we conduct our lives and are raising our family in the same... I swear we're either hanging on to the trapeze bar swinging along or hurtling across space in between the bars. Most of the time, I'm just hanging on for dear life; it carries me along at a fast and steady swing and I have the feeling that I am in control, even though I know better. Then, as I'm merrily swinging along and getting comfortable, I look out ahead and in the distance there's another trapeze bar swinging toward me. It's empty... I can already sense the exhilaration; I close my eyes and let go. I would say I've become addicted. I don't know much, but for me, I know the unknown means opportunity. Opportunity to create, explore. Sure it comes with growth, and most likely pain, but more than anything, aliveness. I've built my entire life based upon this hunch -  in my heart of hearts I know that in order for me to grow, I must release my grip on this present, well-known bar and forge ahead. And albeit the history of always surviving the swing, the question persists, "Will I miss the bar and be crushed on the unseen rocks at the bottom?"

I do it anyway.  Not fearless, but faithful. I have to trust it because, even without a guarantee or safety net, there's no going back - continuing to hang on to the old bar is no longer on the list of alternatives.

So, for a second, which might feel like an eternity, I soar across the dark void... the past is gone, the future not yet here.

I pour my heart out to you, our readers, our loyal community, because I believe in the power of story. In my experience, it's between trapeze bars, the unpredictability, that make for the best stories. We are all trapeze artists and every single one of us has a story. These stories are lessons. Legacies. They are tools to connect. And when told correctly they can change lives. From one person's life to millions.

At Lake + Co. we're in the business of storytelling. It's our core belief that it's everyday ordinary people who change the world by acknowledging their stories. It's the stories that drive us to feel and desire the in-between, even when we do everything in our power to avoid those marvelous, pit-of-the-stomach, free-fall moments, they assure us we can survive the 'in-between' of jobs, relationships, loss... life.

These pages are filled with stories that move us, make us feel human, and inspire us. Cover-to-cover, every ad, every article - there's a story; these are the folks who have lunged toward the bar at one time or another, outcome unknown.

The reality is that we live in a world of extreme and ongoing change and I'd be willing to bet that's exactly where many of us find ourselves today. May our stories serve as a testament that there's always a way to get back into the swing of things. May they inspire us to continuously reinvent, move us to do and be better, and to always embrace the season - that's where the fun is!

This new year, tell your story. Don't just coast. Do back flips, mid-air!

Because at the end of the day, all we have is our story. Make it a good one.
